THE STORY

If you’re like me and love the unique raw landscape of Iceland – this piece is for you! This is actually the first studio painting I’ve done of Búrfellsgjá, even though I have hiked and painted here sooo many times! This place is amazing - the jagged lava rocks rise around you as you make your way along the winding path through this lava channel. It was especially inspiring on one of the visits when the sun was out. One of the sides of lava rock was cast into shadow and created these interestingly shaped shadows which stretched over the grass. 

What I particularly love about this place is the crazy rock formations formed from the lava. (Estimated to be around 7,000 years old!) They are so full of texture and patterns. I wanted to convey this by using different brushes and a palette knife to apply the paint thickly and get more interesting textures and marks in these rocky areas.
